All Tea Comes From The Same Tea Leaf

All Tea Comes From The Same Tea Leaf

One Plant, Many Teas: The Fascinating Journey from Leaf to Cup

When people think of tea, they often assume that green tea, black tea, white tea, and oolong tea come from different plants. Surprisingly, that's not true.

Every true tea comes from the same plant — Camellia sinensis. What makes each tea unique is not the plant itself, but how the leaves are handled after they are picked.

It All Starts in the Tea Garden

The journey of exceptional tea begins long before processing. It starts with careful plucking in the tea garden.

Tea quality is largely determined by which leaves are harvested. The youngest and most tender leaves produce the finest teas.

  • One bud only – Creates the highest-quality tea, often known as tippy tea, prized for its delicate flavor, aroma, and golden tips.
  • One bud and one leaf – Produces another premium grade with an excellent balance of flavor and character.
  • As plucking moves further down the stem, using older and larger leaves, the tea quality gradually changes from good to average.

In other words, great tea begins with great leaf selection.

The Magic Happens During Processing

Once the leaves are picked, the manufacturing process determines what type of tea they become.

Black Tea

Black tea undergoes full fermentation (oxidation). This process transforms the leaves into their rich, dark color and develops the bold, full-bodied flavor that black tea is famous for.

Green Tea

Green tea is not fermented. Soon after harvesting, the leaves are heated to stop oxidation, preserving their fresh green color, grassy aroma, and high level of natural antioxidants.

Oolong Tea

Oolong tea is partially (semi) fermented. Sitting between green and black tea, it offers a wonderful balance of fresh, floral notes and rich, complex flavors.

White Tea

White tea receives the least processing. Made from young buds and tender leaves, it is gently withered and dried, resulting in a delicate, naturally sweet, and subtle cup.

From Garden to Cup

Every cup of tea tells a story that begins in the tea garden. The skill of the tea plucking determines the quality of the leaves, while the expertise of the tea maker shapes their final character.

Although green, black, white, and oolong teas all originate from the same tea plant, the combination of careful leaf selection and unique processing methods creates an incredible diversity of flavors, aromas, and appearances.

The next time you enjoy a cup of tea, remember that its journey began with a single leaf—and the craftsmanship that transformed it into something truly special.
